Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said that he would soon lift the state of emergency order dating back to the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The order was originally issued in March of 2020 and has been largely stripped following the availability of vaccines, but Cooper kept the declaration in place to ensure the Department of Health and Human Services had the necessary staff to deal with public health issues. According to Governor Cooper, beginning on August 15, the order will be lifted. (WRAL)
  2. Several area law enforcement agencies gathered on Tuesday to announce the establishment of the Violent Crime Action Partnership in Raleigh. U.S. Attorney Michael Easley Jr. reported that grand juries have already indicted 27 people in the last three weeks in Raleigh. Agencies have seized significant quantities of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl and crack. Authorities also seized 26 guns and more than 200 round of ammunition. (abc11, WRAL)
  3. On Sunday three individuals attempted to shoplift from a Raleigh Walmart. According to a news release, an off-duty deputy was working at the Walmart Supercenter on New Hope Church Road at about 1 p.m. when he was informed that three people were taken to the store's office on suspicion of stealing merchandise. While searching the men, two of them fled the store. After a brief chase, one suspect was detained. (FOX8)
  4. Shaw University has submitted a zoning request this month that would allow it to build up to 30 or 40 stories high. Shaw University leaders want to turn its footprint into a new downtown district with new school buildings, local businesses, amenities and possible high-rises for housing. The school will be renovating three historic buildings thanks to a $1.5 million federal grant. During the Monday community meeting, some alumni expressed concerns about impacts of the development. (CBS17)
  5. A police chase that began near the Harrison Avenue exit on I-40 came to an end at an apartment complex near PNC Arena. Raleigh Police said that the suspect was driving a white Acura that was stolen from Johnston County. The chase ended when the driver sped around a corner into the apartment complex and hit a DoorDash driver's van. (abc11, WRAL)
