Technology Keeping Us Connected
Communications platforms can keep us connected with friends - new and old alike!
I'm part of a Sunday School group, and it seems like every week we're sorting out the same handful of things, whether it's who's teaching, who's bringing the snacks, or if the time or the room has changed. Thankfully, we have Discord, a communications platform that lets us sort it all out in a few minutes on my phone, so nobody falls through the cracks and everybody shows up ready.
That same platform is where I keep up with a lot of my longtime friends, who are scattered all over the place now. These are the friendships that don't usually survive adulthood, just because life gets busy and distance does the rest. That's why I'm so grateful, because everyone talks about how the internet has made us lonelier, but for me it's done the opposite. These are people I would have lost by now, and instead, I've never felt closer to them.
What I love most is that this isn't unique to my little Sunday School group. Communications platforms like Discord, Slack, and Microsoft Teams are quietly running all kinds of ordinary, wonderful things: parent groups planning a class party, hobbyists trading tips, a podcast fan club that became a real friendship. They help us show up for each other online so we can show up for each other in person too.

There are millions of arrangements like mine happening on these platforms right now, and I bet a lot of people don't even think of them this way. But when I think about how many friendships, communities, and little acts of care are only possible because of a few messages on a screen, I'm just grateful these platforms exist
