The department is also central to debates over a possible youth curfew and regional hiring needs, while several high-profile criminal cases and thefts are unfolding across city neighborhoods and nearby communities.
   

2. Raleigh nonprofit turns nine lots into 25 affordable rental homes (cbs17.com) — Southeast Raleigh Promise is transforming nine city-owned lots into 25 affordable rental homes, with rents ranging from about $600 to $2,000 and long-term affordability guaranteed for 75 years. Backed by more than $3 million in city financing and a ground lease, the project showcases Raleigh's zoning changes and density policies, with three homes already finished and leasing now open to qualifying households.
   

3. 'Intoxicated' Raleigh police detective charged with assault after altercations at Wake Forest restaurant (wnct.com) — A Raleigh Police Department detective has been fired and charged after Wake Forest police say he was intoxicated, disruptive, and assaulted several people, including a restaurant manager and an EMT, early Tuesday. The off-duty officer, who lives in Raleigh, is being held on a secured bond as Raleigh's police chief emphasizes high conduct standards and promises an internal affairs review.
   

4. SWANA's RCon® 2026 Brings Together More Than 1,500 Industry Professionals in St. Louis, MO (wasteadvantagemag.com) — Raleigh is set to host SWANA's RCon 2028 from October 3–6, bringing a major national gathering of waste and resource management professionals to the city. The 2026 conference in St. Louis drew over 1,500 attendees and highlighted workforce development, sustainability, and innovation, with organizers already building anticipation for Raleigh's turn as a premier industry destination.
