Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Thus far, this summer is one of the hottest on record for Raleigh. As of Monday, the average mean temperature at RDU has been 80.2 degrees since June 1. That makes it the third-highest ranking on record through a 54-day period. The summer's average high is currently 91.4 degrees, making it the fourth-warmest. Meteorological summer lasts through August, but it is on track to rank among the hottest. (WRAL)
  2. Today is the official runoff election date for the democratic Wake County Sheriff runoff election. Voters have public safety top of mind as they cast their ballots. Baker has served in the position since 2018, and has received criticism for staffing issues and morale. Baker says if re-elected, engaging and patrolling in communities will remain a priority. Rowe is a veteran who worked within the Wake County Sheriff's Office for more than two decades, and has been working to tackle homelessness, at-risk youth, and affordable housing. (abc11)
  3. The College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University is under fire after the unexpected deaths of three animals on campus. When the university was inspected on May 11, it was revealed that a horse, rabbit, and ferret were euthanized due to mistakes by students. SAEN, a non-profit watchdog that monitors U.S. research facilities say that health problems are not being properly addressed, and filed a complaint against the university. (The Technician)
  4. The fate of a Raleigh home that was built in 1925 is stirring up controversy, as the city considers rezoning for two acres in the Hayes Barton neighborhood. The home, located at Williamson Drive and Carr Street, could be turned into 17 three-bedroom townhomes with garages and an alleyway with the current proposal. A resident in the area says that "17 houses on that plot of land is just not in character for the neighborhood," and they worry about the increase in cars in the area. Developers no longer are required to compromise with the community in order to make changes to properties. (CBS17)
  5. Wake Technical Community College welcomed officials from the White House's Office of Management and Budget to campus last week. Students from the Baking and Pastry Arts program provided a buffet lunch as part of a major class project. After the lunch, the guests toured the skilled trade labs and learned about programs available. The trip was part of the White House Office of Management and Budget's broader trip through North Carolina to learn about the state's education and workforce development systems. (WakeTech)
