Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Downtown Raleigh Alliance released their second-quarter market report this week, and it shows positive data across the board. COVID-19 impacts are still present, but residential occupancy is at 95% and food and beverage sales have seen nearly a 30% increase over the same quarter last year. The report also highlighted the increase in hotel occupancy and tourism from April through June, and the success of major festivals and events. (abc11, INDY Week)
  2. A video has gone viral that is highlighting a growing problem in the area. The video has been shared thousands of times that shows an incident between two drivers on Interstate 440. According to data from the Wake County Sheriff's Office, deputies have received 20 calls so far this year regarding road rage incidents. The viral video shows a sedan making multiple attempts to change lanes to shake a work truck tailgating them, until they stop their vehicle and get out, causing the truck to flee. (WRAL)
  3. Wake County is getting a jump start on their Holiday Cheer Program with a Summer donation drive. The program brings holiday meals and gifts to many children, seniors, and more in the county. From now through August 31, monetary donations are being accepted through the Holiday Cheer website. In order to receive the donated gifts and meals, families must be nominated by their social worker or case manager during the nomination period in October. (CBS17)
  4. The Wake County Sheriff's Office held an active shooter training exercise at Wendell Middle School on Thursday. Many lessons were tailored following the shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Local deputies were trained on how to respond to a nightmare situation, utilizing Rapid Deployment Active Shooting Training. Officers ran many scenarios to test decision-making and decisive action that ran from 8:00am-5:00pm. (WRAL)
  5. On Tuesday, Wake County Public School leaders presented the Wake County School Board with three options to keep students out of classrooms on election day. The first option would change an existing teacher work day from another day on the calendar, the second would move a vacation/track out day, and the third would create a calendar out/track out day on Election Day. The school board favored option three, describing it as less intrusive, and would also include no school on Juneteenth as well as Election Day. (abc11, WRAL) The Wake County Board of Education also reviewed data on student discipline, that reflected racial disparities. Leaders are now working on a districtwide plan to cut down on the divergence in punishments. (WRAL)
