'Weekend Of Enlightenment' to Recognize the Life of George Floyd
George Floyd Memorial Center's First Annual Signature Fundraiser Includes Golf Tournament, Conference and Gala During Memorial Day Weekend
Raleigh, NC – During the last two years since the tragic and senseless killing of George Perry Floyd, Jr., his family in his birth state of North Carolina has been organizing and doing the thoughtful groundwork to establish a physical center to honor his life and legacy – The George Floyd Memorial Center (GFMC). The goal of the Center is to forge a path to deeper understanding between members of the community and to encourage personal growth, healing, and emotional and financial prosperity for families.
“As a family, we made a conscious decision not to become bitter victims, but rather to use the momentum of the global outcry and outrage to become a vessel of change and lead communities from perpetual trauma to transformation,” said Roger Floyd, Chief Impact Officer, GFMC, and George’s uncle. “The Weekend Of Enlightenment will be uplifting, empowering, enlightening, and the beginning of the catalyst to positively impact the lives of individuals in the communities we seek to serve.”
To further generate awareness about the resources necessary to build the Center and to spread the vision, mission and goals of the organization, the GFMC will be presenting a 'Weekend Of Enlightenment', May 27-28, 2022 in the Raleigh area, inviting those interested in turning hate into hope and tragedy into triumph to come together. It has been designed as a transformative weekend that will educate, elevate and enlighten those present. This weekend adds to the GFMC’s 5/25 Day of Enlightenment campaign that began last year on the one-year remembrance of his death. For those interested in attending some or all parts of the GFMC 'Weekend Of Enlightenment', go to the 'Upcoming Events’ section on www.georgefloydmc.org to purchase tickets, become a sponsor and/or to make a donation.

“We are creating the Center as a beacon of hope to light the way for underserved communities and for those seeking answers to, ‘how do we move forward?’,” said Thomas McLaurin, Executive Director, GFMC, and George’s first cousin. “By going into the neighborhoods (and eventually being able to bring the community to us), connecting with the people, and better understanding the root causes of their despair, we can better create coaching opportunities and build stronger communities in every sense of the word.”
“We believe by sharing in this ‘Weekend Of Enlightenment’ and raising funds for the physical construction of the Center, we will collectively be able to continue to uplift and support individuals and community organizations making a difference in Raleigh and beyond,” said Fred Huff, Director of Program Development.
