Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Zach Padget, a Wake County Democrat, has decided that he will no longer be running for a seat in the North Carolina House. Padget was selected by voters to run for the seat that was held by Rep. Grier Martin in NC House District 34. Padget said in a Facebook post that his young family and career demand his undivided attention, and now is not the time for him to run for office. County executive committee members plan to select a new candidate in a meeting on Monday. (WRAL)
  2. Raleigh residents are rallying to fight the demolition of the historic Seaboard Station. The historic building opened in September of 1942, and in the 1980s an effort was made to have the site added to the National Register of Historic Places. The fight for preservation has been ongoing since Turnbridge Equities purchased the property. In June, Raleigh's Planning Commission voted to approve the rezoning application as presented, but several councilmembers have committed to oppose the rezoning if Turnbridge does not include a condition requiring some form of preservation. (INDY Week)
  3. Charles Johnson, a retired NFL wide receiver and 2001 Super Bowl champion was found dead in Raleigh on Sunday. Johnson taught at Heritage High School in Wake Forest alongside other former NFL players. Police responded to the Hampton Inn on Spring Forest Road in Raleigh for a welfare check. (abc11, CBS17, WCNC)
  4. Two individuals were shot outside of a Raleigh recording studio on Tuesday night. The recording studio was the site of a homicide last year. Officers responded to the site on Benson Drive around 11:45 p.m. to find an adult with gunshot wounds. An injured teen was found minutes away. Neither are suffering from life-threatening injuries. Evidence of gunshots also were found on the building and some vehicles in the area. (WRAL)
  5. Cary police are asking for help identifying a driver responsible for a hit-and-run on E. Chatham Street on Tuesday. The driver hit a cyclist who was travelling west and the victim has been taken to the hospital for treatment. The suspect's vehicle is believed to be a white or cream colored SUV and the Cary Police Department's Traffic Safety Team is investigating the incident as a felony hit-and-run. (CBS17)
