1. Six decades after first plans, eastern Beltway nears opening with a $1 billion estimate (wschronicle.com) — Winston-Salem drivers are about to get a new way around town as the final eastern sections of the Northern Beltway, carrying I-74, are slated to open Sept. 19, creating a continuous 17-mile loop to U.S. 52. The project's cost has climbed above $1 billion, and while the eastern side is nearly ready, much of the western loop still lacks construction funding or firm timelines.
   

2. Winston-Salem man facing felony charges in William Drive shooting (myfox8.com) — A Winston-Salem man is jailed without bond after police say he fired from a vehicle on William Drive and pistol-whipped three people in an alleged Sept. 7 shooting. He faces 11 felony charges, including assault with intent to kill and discharging a weapon into occupied homes or vehicles, according to Winston-Salem police and court warrants.
   

3. Winston-Salem's The Grounds development unveils first wave of retailers for fall 2027 opening (wfmynews2.com) — A major new mixed-use project called The Grounds is rising along Winston-Salem's Deacon Boulevard, backed by the city, Wake Forest University, and private developers, with an opening targeted for fall 2027. Early construction is well underway on retail, multifamily housing, offices, and a public multi-use trail, positioning the 100-acre site to become a year-round hub for shopping, living, and events near key venues.
   

4. Wake Forest medical Students, Atrium Health start wound clinic for the homeless in Winston-Salem (myfox8.com) — A new student-run wound clinic is now open Wednesdays on Broad Street in Winston-Salem, offering free care to people experiencing homelessness and connecting them with broader health and housing support. Backed by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and City with Dwellings, the project already has dozens of medical student volunteers and may expand with a mobile clinic to reach more unsheltered neighbors.
   

5. Davidson County T.R.A.C.E. team seizes 10 pounds of marijuana in I-285 traffic stop (abc45.com subscription) — Law enforcement seized 10 pounds of marijuana during a Sept. 8 traffic stop on I-285 near Hickory Tree Road by Winston-Salem, arresting a 31-year-old local man. Davidson County deputies say the driver faces multiple trafficking and paraphernalia charges, with cash also confiscated and a court appearance set for later this month.
