• One final push: Heart Math Tutoring expand search for volunteers, grades continue climbing (abc45.com) — Heart Math Tutoring in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools urgently needs about 50 more volunteers by September 18 to support 170 elementary students in math. The free, in-school program has helped 97% of participating Winston-Salem students meet growth goals, and organizers are holding a virtual info session September 18 before tutoring begins October 5.
   

• Gio Lopez (3 TDs) dazzles in Wake Forest debut rout of Akron (statenews.net) — Wake Forest fans in Winston-Salem saw a strong home opener as new quarterback Gio Lopez threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns in a 38–16 win over Akron on Thursday night. Big plays, including two scoring passes over 70 yards, helped the Demon Deacons dominate at home and set an upbeat tone for the season in Winston-Salem.
   

• Winston-Salem man sentenced prison Speedway robbery kidnapping (wxii12.com) — A Winston-Salem man has been sentenced to more than 24 years in prison, plus additional supervised release, for kidnapping a Speedway store clerk during a 2025 robbery attempt on University Parkway. Winston-Salem police first responded to the empty store before an Ashanti Alert and Tennessee deputies helped recover the victim and vehicle, leading to his extradition back to Forsyth County.
