Teen Coordinator Dies, School Threat Policy, Memorial Day Travel

In today's Marietta Morning we remember a young man who did a lot for teens out at the Boys and Girls club.

MARIETTA, OH — Good morning Marietta. It's Thursday and that means there will be a Washington County Commissioner meeting this morning at 9 a.m., members of the public are invited. The meeting is held at the Job and Family Services building. We have some stories for you this morning, don't read them while you're driving to the meeting.

Boys and Girls Club teen coordinator dies: Janelle Patterson of the Marietta Times reports that the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County will be closed for the rest of the week after the death of a staff member. Twenty-five-year-old Garrett Scott passed away on Tuesday. He was the son of the club's program coordinator Angela Scott, and he was also the club's teen coordinator.

Local schools to review policies after threats: Over the past week, there have been 13 bomb or active shooter threats to schools in Washington County. The schools handled these situations very well, but Todd Baucher of WTAP reports that they might be looking at doing things a little differently. Wolf Creek and Fort Frye expect to make minor changes in their security plans.

Memorial Day travel: Brett Wharf of WMOA reports that AAA is predicting more travel this Memorial Day than usual. Last year's Memorial Day travel saw record lows due to the pandemic. Automobile travel is expected to be up by 52%, bus, train, and ship travel is expecting a 27% increase, but air travel is expected to see a whopping 564% increase. AAA wants people to know these numbers so they can better know what to expect when planning their travel.

Congressman Johnson votes no on drug bill: This week with the help of Southeast Ohio's U.S. Representative Bill Johnson, the Fairness in Orphan Drug Exclusivity Act was not passed. The bill aimed to close a loophole that prevented competing drugs from hitting the market. It will not move onto the Senate.
