📰 News we're reading

1. New Geospatial Science Program Builds on Established Strengths (utoledo.edu) — The University of Toledo has launched a new Geospatial Science undergraduate program, giving local students cutting-edge training in mapping, data analysis, and AI tools that are in high demand. With strong ties to Lucas County offices, the city of Toledo, and regional agencies, the program aims to funnel graduates directly into well-paying, data-driven jobs that shape Northwest Ohio communities.

2. Toledo group looks beyond the gun to address recent public housing killings (13abc.com) — After two recent killings at Toledo public housing complexes, the city's Violence Reduction Council is working with groups like the YWCA to map high-risk areas and connect youth with services. Families who've lost loved ones, including a father whose daughter was killed at Weiler Homes, are urging deeper attention to neighborhood conditions and support systems to prevent future homicides.

3. City Council: More time needed before voting on reallocating ARPA money (toledoblade.com subscription) — Toledo City Council is weighing whether to shift $713,106 in unspent ARPA funds into police and fire wages while backfilling key healthy food projects from the general fund, a move that must be decided before Dec. 31. Council also advanced legislation to support the Healthy Food Small Market program, strengthened protections against landlord retaliation, funded city-wide fuel costs, and rejected a proposed gas station on North Detroit Avenue.

4. TPS to pay full cost of police resource officers under new contract (13abc.com) — Toledo Public Schools will now cover the full cost of Toledo Police school resource officers this year, paying about $279,000 instead of splitting expenses with the city. With fewer TPD officers in TPS buildings and a 6.9-mill levy on November's ballot, city leaders warn budget constraints could end police presence in schools after this year without new funding.

5. Toledo woman says abandoned property draws rats into her yard; city says no one to hold accountable (13abc.com) — A Toledo homeowner near W. Sylvania Ave. says an abandoned commercial property has become dangerously overgrown, attracting rats and other pests into her yard and costing her hundreds in vet bills. With the building now on forfeited land and no clear owner, city and county agencies say they have limited responsibility, leaving neighbors pushing for cleanup and better safety protections.
