Cinco de Clinton: President Clinton Campaigns for Hillary in Portland

Introducing him to the crowd, Governor Brown says that First Gentleman has a nice ring to it.

Less than two weeks before the Oregon Primary, Hillary Clinton sent her most prominent supporter here - President Bill Clinton.

"I've grown hoarse in the service of my candidate," he told the crowd.

Moments early, Governor Kate Brown - who endorsed Hillary during President Clinton's last stop in Portland - had introduced him saying that First Gentleman "has a nice ring to it."

While Hillary is close to having the Democratic nomination sewn up, Senator Bernie Sanders is still giving her a challenge, having won Indiana this week and expected to do well in Oregon.

"Her whole goal is opening opportunities for everyone," Clinton said of his wife in his 45-minute speech before about 700 people.

"She is the best change maker I have ever know. If you believe that, you still have time to get her a lot of votes,” he said.

He also touched on many familiar themes, especially economic inequality.

"Extreme inequality is an economic disaster because we get two-thirds of our GDP from consumer spending, and sometimes even more," he said.

"You can't do that if the consumers can't spend."

As for the man perceived to be Hillary's opponent in the general election Donald Trump, the former president drew a sharp contrast between what he says his wife is doing and what he says that Trump is doing.

"It's easy to be the blame candidate," he said. "But it's far better to be the responsible candidate and say, 'What are we going to do about it'"?

Earlier in the day, the Clinton was in Bend where he gave a similar talk.

Before arriving at Portland's Leftbank Annex, President Clinton had his motorcade make several stops along Northeast Alberta where he stopped at several shops.

Clinton ended his day with a fundraiser at the home of Benjamin Souede, the general counsel to Governor Brown and a staffer to Hillary Clinton when she was a Senator from New York, and his wife, Jill.

Tickets to the fundraiser ranged from between $500 and $2700.

While this was President Clinton's second trip to the region, Hillary has not yet come to Oregon this campaign season.

Sanders has made three trips to Oregon.

On Friday, the presumed Republican candidate, Donald Trump, will be in Eugene.
