📰 News we're reading

• Salem's Grand Theatre closes; performers claim promoters failed to pay them (kptv.com) — Salem's historic Grand Theatre has closed and canceled all upcoming events while its owner seeks new management, after promoters allegedly failed to pay performers and racked up more than $100,000 in unpaid rent. Local bands and other acts say they're still owed thousands from ticket sales, and Salem police are investigating, leaving a key downtown arts hub in limbo for now.

• Oregon university to go tuition-free for eligible students in 2027 (statesmanjournal.com) — Families in Salem and across Oregon could see big tuition relief as Salem-based Willamette University plans to waive tuition for eligible undergraduates from households earning under $80,000 starting in 2027-28. The Oregon Access Scholarship will cover remaining tuition after grants, opening Willamette's Salem and Portland programs to more local students weighing college costs.

• Wildfire costs highlight lawmakers' work in Salem this week (opb.org) — State lawmakers are gathering in Salem this week to tackle soaring wildfire costs, with more than $120 million in immediate funding on the table after a record fire season. During three days of hearings at the Capitol, they'll also discuss ballot drop boxes, transportation funding after a failed tax hike, data center rules, and Oregon's public defense crisis.
