Two Honored For Saving Mother, Baby From Burning Car In Lower Merion
Rachel Attebery and Ryan Porto leaped into action after seeing a crash in early November. They saved two lives with their actions.
ARDMORE, PA – Two civilians received commendations from Lower Merion Township officials recently for taking heroic actions last year. Rachel Attebery and Ryan Porto saw a car crash in November and ended up saving lives with their selfless actions.
Attebery and Porto saw a crash on at 6:37 a.m. November 6 on Haverford Road in Penn Wynne and they stopped to check on those involved.
They soon learned one driver was unable to get out of her vehicle, which was on fire, due to the vehicle's damage and injuries sustained by the driver. They also learned an infant was in the back seat.

Attebery and Porto couldn't get into the car as the doors were locked.
Porto eventually opened the drivers side door and pulled the driver out.

Then, Attebery, like a superhero, climbed into the burning car to rescue the infant right before it was fully engulfed in flames.

The pair stayed with the mother and child until emergency crews arrived.
"Two lives were saved by the courageous action of Rachel and Ryan," Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael McGrath said at the commendation ceremony. "Their heroic actions and unyielding determination in the face of great personal danger undoubtedly the mother and child from severe injury or death."
