Dante in Our World: 750 Years Later
"Dante and the Birth of Cinema" presented by John Welle, PhD.

Please join us in Speakers’ Corner on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. for the second event in the Dante in Our World: 750 Years Later lecture series. John P. Welle, PhD, will deliver a talk entitled “Dante and the Birth of Cinema.” In his talk, Dr. Welle, professor of Italian and concurrent professor of film, television and theatre at the University of Notre Dame, will explore the cultural intersection between a classic like The Divine Comedy and the development of the new cinematographic technology beginning with Georges Méliès’ Inferno(1911), the first silent movie adopting special effects. At the same time, he will also reflect on Dante’s recurring presence in the imagery of Italian and American cinematography, from the 20th century to the present.
This event, co-sponsored by Falvey Memorial Library and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, is free and open to the public.
