Film/TV Group Discussion and Screening at New Horizons in Narberth - "M*A*S*H"

Adults 55+ join Dr. Mark Shulkin in a comprehensive discussion of the TV Series MASH at New Horizons in Narberth

On Wednesday, July 12 at 12:30 PM, Dr. Mark Shulkin, Clinical Assoc. Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus at Drexel University Medical College, leads the discussion and shares examples from his own life to illustrate how classic television series and films can mirror common life experiences. In this session, view clips, discuss profound universal themes, and recognize characteristics of human nature found in "M*A*S*H." Group discussion is encouraged

M*A*S*H, 1972-1983, is one of the highest-rated shows in television history. The series follows a team of doctors and support staff, stationed at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in South Korea during the Korean War, who find that laughter is the best way to deal with their situation.

While the show is traditionally viewed as a comedy, many episodes were of a more serious tone. Airing on network primetime while the Vietnam War was still going on, the show was forced to walk the fine line of commenting on that war while at the same time not seeming to protest against it. For this reason, the show's discourse, under the cover of comedy, often questioned, mocked, and grappled with America's role in the Cold War.
