Harcum College’s Veterinary Technology Program in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine is looking for 8-10 dogs to participate in a canine blood drive. The VETmobile unit is coming to Harcum’s Bryn Mawr Campus to obtain blood from eligible dogs on Tuesday, October 7, from 1:00 -5:00 p.m. behind the Academic Center.
Blood donations help ensure that an adequate supply of blood is available to treat critically ill and injured animal patients at the Ryan Veterinary Hospital in West Philadelphia, which treats an estimated 33,000 animals a year.
In order to donate, dogs must meet the following criteria:
- Weigh between 50-150 pounds
- Be between 1-6 years old
- Cannot be on any ongoing medication
- Have to be off any short-term medication for 14 days
- Cannot have a chronic illness or a condition such as diabetes, heart murmur, seizures, or heartworm disease
- Cannot be an English Bulldog, Staffordshire Terrier, Pit Bull, or Pit Bull mix
- Cannot be a female dog in heat
Dogs will be scheduled for donations at twenty-minute intervals. As a thank you, the owner will receive free dog food, free blood work, and free blood from the Penn Veterinary Blood Bank should your dog ever need a transfusion.
To schedule a donation time, email or call Harcum’s Vet Tech Program Director Kathy Koar Wisniewski atkkoar@harcum.edu or call 610.526.6033.
