Brothers Killed In Mt. Airy Feb. 16 Had 'Friction' With Others: Report

The brothers were shot and killed Feb. 16. Their mother is still struggling with her loss.

Two brothers were shot and killed in Mt. Airy on Feb. 16 and police said the young men had “friction” with others men in the neighborhood.

Now a month later, their mother is still in mourning and police are unsure of what caused the friction.

Maria Yelverton told Philly.com her mother died on Feb. 10, and then just six days later her sons, Symir Yelverton, 23, and Raheem Martin, 24 were shot and killed on East Upsal Street where they were staying with a cousin.

“It’s like half of me is gone,” the Maria Yelverton told the outlet. “I’m not the same person. I know I’m not."

Patch initially reported the killings were potentially the result of neighborhood argument.

Philadelphia Police said the brothers had “friction” with other men in the neighborhood, according to Philly.com.

Despite having prior drug arrests, Maria Yelverton told the outlet her sons got drugs out of their lives, leading her to rule out drugs as a reason for the killings.

Philadelphia Police Homicide Capt. James Clark told Philly.com authorities don't know what caused "friction" felt by the brothers and other men in the area.
