The Chestnut Hill Center for Enrichment presents Beverly Shaffer Gast.
A teacher and school administrator by profession, Mrs. Gast became a published author in 2011 with the release of her first book Angel in Black...a Musical Life in Letters. This is the story of Gast's older sister Elaine Shaffer, trained during her youth on violin, cello and timpani, self-taught on the flute,later a student of renowned flutist William Kincaid, graduate of Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music. Shaffer went on to become second flutist with the Kansas City Philharmonic and principal with Houston's Symphony Orchestra; ultimately making mid-20th century history as the world's first female concert flutist.Gast plans to speak about and read from her book (copies will be available for purchase), and also present a recording of a performance by Elaine Shaffer.
