Home-Schooled Hiller Takes Fourth in National Spelling Bee

Lena Greenberg, local eighth-grader, made the Championship Finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently profiled a home-schooled student from Chestnut Hill who spelled her way all the way to national championships.

Lena Greenberg, 14, spelled words most of us have never heard of.

The website for Scripps reported that the championship round was aired live on ESPN May 31, 8 - 10 p.m. Greenberg's spelling earned her fourth place (tie) overall in the competition, which pays out $3,000 and a set of encyclopedias, along with other prizes given to spellers for reaching the competition and higher rounds.
