The state Department of Heath said it received 177 grower/processor applications.
A second round of permits is expected to be issued in the future, with 25 total growing facilities, Philly.com reported. The winners of 27 dispensary permits will be announced next week, Philly.com said, citing sources within the Department of Health.
The 12 growers have six months to become operational. They won't be permitted to grow medical marijuana until the Department of Health has determined they are operational.
The Department of Heath says the process remains on track to get medication to patients with serious medical conditions by 2018.
