CB Superintendent Moves Up Retirement Date

Dr. David Weitzel will now retire on Friday, May 20 instead of at the end of June.

Central Bucks Superintendent David Weitzel has moved up his retirement date, he told the community in a letter Tuesday.

Weitzel was originally slated for retirement on June 30. "Unfortunately, I find it necessary to move that date up. I notified our School Board on April 25 that my last day in Central Bucks will be Friday, May 20th," he said in the letter. He did not state the reason for his early departure.

The district's contract with new superintendent John Kopicki begins July 1, according to an employment agreement approved last month.

School district spokeswoman Melanie Sullivan said an interim plan has not yet been finalized.

Weitzel had kind words about the district in his early departure announcement.

"I am especially grateful to have been a member of an educational community that has been united in its dedication to doing great things for every student and their families. Our success is not the result of the achievements of any single individual, but because of the commitment of the entire community – students and parents, teachers, staff, and administrators - to make a positive difference in the lives of ALL children. I believe that this extraordinary level of devotion to high quality public education is what makes Central Bucks a truly special and successful school district and community," the letter said.
