Just after 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Pennsylvania State Police said they responded to a home on Durham Street in Riegelsville Borough for a domestic incident. When they arrived, they discovered the woman and a 34-year-old man had fled, police said in a press release.

The troopers later found the woman walking on a path along the river with her three children, but when they attempted to speak to her, she jumped into the river, police said.

The troopers safely secured the children, but attempts to retrieve the woman from the river were unsuccessful, police said.

After several hours, a search for the woman by the Riegelsville Fire Department and a rescue team from Plumstead was suspended. Earlier reports that the children were rescued from the river were erroneous.

Police said during the search, the man arrived back on the scene and was taken into custody on a warrant.
