In Golf Bad Advice Goes A long Way!

I've now given over 37K golf lessons and there isn't a day that goes by...

Where a student isn’t working on something based on some advice given by a friend, a relative, someone on the range, social media, etc. All this advice by the way was given in good faith, no one is trying to get a golfer to swing worse or play poorly but sadly this is usually the case.

Keep in mind the simple reality that something that works or worked for you may not work for someone else. The fact is, it may make them worse.

As an example, you have person A that was struggling with fat shots and hooks the ball to the left. They try shifting their weight more toothier front foot and all the sudden they’re hitting it much better, as this moves the low point of their swing farther forward and their swing is now more efficient.

They then go to a golf outing and proceed to tell their playing partner (player B), who suffers from a significant slice (like about 80% of all amateur golfers) and constantly hitting thin, weak shots. Player A goes on to relay what has worked for him, to try shifting their weight forwards, as it dramatically helped their game so it will certainly help theirs?

You know where I’m going with this; the problem is, for the slicer, this will tend to make the problem worse. You see when we shift our weight forwards; most people will present a more open face, a more open face the more the ball want to go the right for right-handed golfer. This effectively turns that 30 yard slice into a 50 yard slice, not the result we were looking for.

Not mention that thin-shot likely will also become worse as they shift their low point forward as well.

Here’s the crazy thing about golf, this should be obvious, but it's not for some reason? - Most golf advice is not universally helpful to all golfers. It needs to be tailored to your specific issues. This is why going down a YouTube and/or social media rabbit hole can and most likely damage your game not help. Most of the advice will only help the golfer that present the exact challenge it is specifically intended to help.

Even listening to advice from the best golf professionals in the World may hurt your game. For example, Jack Nicklaus wrote one of the best-selling golf books of all time “Golf My Way”. In it he chronicles just that how to play like Jack, the problem should be obvious; you’re not Jack and never will be. Most of his suggestions in his book would make the average golfer play worse.

This is not to say that Jack’s book wasn't a great read - but that most of the info pertains to a very specific way to swing the club and play like Jack did. If you could do that you wouldn’t be reading this article.

At Imagen Golf, I help you identify what your biggest issue truly is, your weakest link preventing you from playing your best and what you need to do to improve. I then give you advice and drills that relate to your specific issues, not anyone else's. So if you’re looking to improve your game now, this season (and keep that improvement going for the rest of your golf life), check us out @ ImagenGolf.com

Here’s to getting you the swing and game you’ve always Imagined!
