Unleash Your Inner Speed Demon: 3 Swing Speed Drills to Do at Home

Want to bomb drives like Bryson DeChambeau without leaving the comfort of your living room?

While hitting the gym or range is ideal, you can still boost your swing speed with these three effective drills you can do at home:

1. Towel Drill:
This classic drill is a favorite among golf instructors for a reason. It helps you feel the proper sequencing and release in your swing, promoting speed and power.

  • How to do it:
    • Grab a medium-sized towel and fold it lengthwise.
    • Grip the towel as you would your driver, with your trail hand below your lead hand.
    • Make slow-motion swings, focusing on a smooth takeaway and a powerful downswing.
    • As you reach the impact zone, "snap" the towel, feeling the acceleration and release through the hitting zone.
  • Why it works: The towel provides resistance, forcing you to engage your core and lower body to generate speed. The snapping motion promotes a late release, maximizing clubhead speed at impact.

2. Overspeed Swings with a Light Weight:
Overspeed training involves swinging faster than your normal speed to train your muscles to move more quickly. You can achieve this at home with a light weight or even a rolled-up sock.

  • How to do it:
    • Hold a light weight (1-2 lbs) or a rolled-up sock in your lead hand.
    • Make swings with just your lead arm, focusing on accelerating through the impact zone.
    • Gradually increase your swing speed while maintaining control.
  • Why it works: Swinging a lighter object allows you to achieve higher speeds, training your muscles to fire more rapidly. This can translate to increased clubhead speed when you return to your regular clubs.

3. Hip Rotation Drills:
Generating power in the golf swing starts with a strong hip turn. These drills help you improve your hip flexibility and rotation, unlocking more speed and power.

  • How to do it:
    • Standing Torso Twists: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and arms crossed over your chest. Rotate your torso to the right, then to the left, feeling the stretch in your core and obliques.
    • Seated Hip Rotations: Sit on a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Place your hands on your knees and rotate your hips to the right, then to the left, focusing on a full range of motion.
  • Why it works: Improving hip flexibility and rotation allows you to coil more effectively in your backswing and unleash that stored energy in your downswing, leading to increased clubhead speed.

  • Warm-up: Always warm up your muscles before performing these drills to prevent injury.
  • Focus on Form: Maintain good posture and balance throughout the drills. Don't sacrifice form for speed.
  • Consistency is Key: Perform these drills regularly to see lasting improvement in your swing speed.

By incorporating these drills into your routine, you can make significant strides in your swing speed without ever leaving your home. So, grab a towel, a light weight, and get ready to unleash your inner speed demon!
