Damage toll is rising (centredaily.com) — Erie Cemetery remains closed for at least a few more weeks as contractors clear hundreds of storm-damaged trees and assess headstone damage from the early September windstorm. Families may need to work with insurers to repair markers, while older graves without relatives could rely on community sponsors, and cleanup and replanting are expected to cost at least $500,000.

Firefighter Challenge National Championship kicks off in Erie (yourerie.com) — Downtown Erie is hosting the Firefighter Challenge National Championships this week, with firefighters from across the U.S. and Canada competing in demanding strength and skills events. Residents are invited to watch for free through Saturday, cheer on participants, and see firsthand how firefighters train to protect their communities.
   

3. EXCLUSIVE: Man Charged 24-Year-Old Cold Case Back in Erie (erienewsnow.com) — Residents in Erie are seeing a major step forward in the decades-old disappearance of 20-year-old Sabrina Kahler, as suspect David Heck has been extradited from Indiana and formally charged in Greene Township. State police and the Erie Cold Case Unit say multiple murder and kidnapping charges have been filed, and the case remains active as court proceedings begin.
   

4. When Erie will see peak fall foliage this year (goerie.com) — If you're planning fall color drives around Erie, expect peak foliage to arrive later here than in the rest of Pennsylvania, thanks to Lake Erie's moderating effect. Forecasts show only minimal change locally by late September, with patchy color in early October and peak conditions likely around the week of October 27, when most of the state is already past peak.
   

5. Disabled Veterans Enjoy Day on Presque Isle Bay (erienewsnow.com) — Disabled veterans from the Erie VA and Soldiers' and Sailors' Home recently spent a day on Presque Isle Bay aboard a newly upgraded, wheelchair-accessible fishing boat. Organized by S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie and Lake Erie Ministries, the outing offered safe cruising, fishing, and a picnic lunch, expanding access so more local veterans can enjoy time on the water.
