Accused Killer Jumped From 4th Floor Window To Avoid Capture: Feds

PHILADELPHIA — Dayron Burney-Thorn avoided capture for more than a year after being named a suspect in the deadly September 2022 shooting outside Roxborough High School and risked life and limb to evade capture Monday, authorities said.

The 17-year-old, who is accused of being involved in the shooting that killed Nicolas Elizalde, 14 of Havertown and several other teens, was captured Monday in Philadelphia's Germantown section.

But the U.S. Marshals Service said Burney-Thorn put his own safety at risk in an effort to avoid being arrested.

According to U.S. Marshals, Burney-Thorn jumped from a fourth-floor window of an apartment complex on the 200 block of West Walnut Lane Monday afternoon when members of the fugitive task force descended on the building.

The teenager was injured from his leap and taken to a hospital for treatment after U.S. Marshals Task Force Officers who were on the ground and struggled with him before he was taken into custody.

Four others — Saleem Miller, 16, Troy Fletcher, 15, Yaaseen Bivins, 21, and Zyheid Jones, 17 — were all taken into custody in connection with the Roxborough shooting.

Burney-Thorn also implicated in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Tahmir Jones the day before the Roxborough shooting on the 640 block of N. 13th Street.
