Art Made From 42,000 Feet of Fishing Line To Be Installed At Montco CC

An art piece made from 42,000 feet of fishing line is being installed at Montgomery County Community College.
The piece, which has not yet been named, will span the 70-foot diagonal length of the College Hall Foyer on the Blue Bell campus. It was designed by Dianne Zotter-Mill, assistant professor of art at MCCC, and Steve Wanna, assistant professor of sound recording and music technology.
The college is implementing the new work in order to "expand the presence of art beyond the walls of the Art Gallery and onto campus."

Because the foyer has a glass facade, the display will be exposed to sunlight, changing its color. Heating vents blowing on the line will also make it move. Together, these variables will "introduce an unpredictable element of motion and sound to the piece," the school said.
“I wanted to create a piece responsive to the conditions of the site, both in construction and material,” said Wanna, who is also an accomplished visual artist. “My primary aim was to interrupt and connect that openness without intruding on it, to create something that would be simultaneously massive in scale yet not readily noticeable.”

A formal event opening the piece will be hosted by Zotter-Mill and Wanna on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 8 a.m. to noon.
