Lansdale Councilman Organizes Donation Of Unwanted Nikes To Vets

The local councilman urges residents not to burn Nike gear in protest of Colin Kaepernick, and instead donate it to a veterans organization.

LANSDALE, PA — With the 2018 NFL season about to begin Thursday night, controversy has erupted anew over Colin Kaepernick and Nike's decision to sponsor the former quarterback. The nationwide issue, which has galvanized support for Kaepernick's stand against police brutality of African-Americans and also incited backlash, was brought home to Lansdale this week.

Councilman Leon Angelichio said that anyone thinking of burning their Nike gear in protest of the company's support of Kaepernick should donate it instead. Namely, to veterans in need.

"Instead of being wasteful, and neglecting the needs of others, and making a statement by burning stuff...we'll put in the hands of a homeless veteran," Angelichio told WNPV 1440.

Nike has included Kaepernick in the 30th anniversary advertising campaign of its Just Do It slogan. The move has been met with reports of people burning their Nike apparel, including sneakers, and people vowing to boycott the brand due to Kaepernick kneeling, rather than standing, while the national anthem was played during the start of NFL games. Some see it as a sign of disrespect to the country and the flag, others see it as a gesture of solidarity and patriotism to the nation's core values of racial justice.

Angelichio said anyone looking to donate could bring Nike shoes, pants, shirts, jerseys, or any other items to his home on 548 Edgemont Avenue in Lansdale. He will then deliver it to a veterans organization, he said.
