North Penn Students Experience Sahara Desert With Virtual Reality

The future is now at North Penn School District.

LANSDALE, PA -- The future is now at North Penn School District.

Students at Pennbrook Middle School are now using Chromebooks and Google Virtual Reality goggles to travel to the Sahara Desert and experience desert cultures, up close and personal.

Superintendent Curtis Dietrich was on hand during a recent class with his cabinet to learn more about the new technology and the role it plays in middle school education.

Students in Mr. Bowers' 7th grade world cultures class are learning about living in dry, desert climates. Their use of the VR goggles helped them to "stand in the middle of a desert oasis" and visit a series of four stations that focused on a different aspect of life in the arid world.

Students also put together a water desalinator using household items, learned about nomadic life, and investigated a water crisis in Yemen, the school district said.
