North Penn Summer Camps: July 18-22

Check out what summer camps are going on at North Penn this week.

Lansdale, PA -- The North Penn School District (NPSD) Community Education Program (CEP) offers a variety of learning and recreational experiences for children during the summer months.

From sports and fitness to music, theater and Lego robotics classes, there's something for everyone in the Community Education Program. The following camps will be run from July 18-22:

Girls & Boys Basketball (Grades 3-8)
Interact with members of the NPHS coaching staff and players who are interested in helping and encouraging young players. Daily games and competitions “by age and ability” will integrate skills learned. Offensive and defensive drills will improve your game whether you’re a seasoned player or beginner.

Aquatics Lessons
Lessons are held in the NPHS Pool for levels starting at pre beginning and stretching to advanced swimmers. The program is taught by experienced NP instructors.

Ce-Ed Tennis
This camp provides a fun tennis experience for first time players, or players eager to improve the fundamentals of their game. It will focus on ground strokes, volleys, and serves. Participants will develop individual skills and experience game based drills designed to teach strategy and tactics. Each camper needs to bring one unopened can of tennis balls, their own racquet, hat, sneakers, snack and filled water bottle.

Cooking for Kids: Budding Bakers (Grades 2-6)
Your Budding Baker will learn the basics of creating some of their favorite baked goods - muffins, cupcakes, brownies and more.

Multimedia Art (Grades 1-7)

Drawing Camp I (Grades 1-5)
Enhance your creativity and drawing skills this summer. Fundamentals of drawing will be taught, including light and shadow, perspective and composition. New subject matter (objects to draw) will be offered each year.

Mini Comics Boot Camp (Grades 2-7)
Write and draw your own mini comic in any style from Marvel to Manga. Your comic will be photocopied so you can share your publication.

3...2…1… Blast Off! The Science of Rocketry (Grades 5-8) *NEW
Houston, we are GO for a fun summer camp! Learn about the history and science of the world’s most exciting machine…rockets! Participants will learn about historical milestones in science and explore the science of rocketry with hands-on activities. Campers will construct different types of rockets (air, water and solid propellant) every day to keep and take home. The instructor is a Senior member of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and has mentored teams in the Team America Rocketry Competition (TARC) and all NAR safety guidelines will be discussed and followed. Highlights of the camp will include the building, design and launch of their own model rocket and a demonstration of high-powered model rockets. WHEN? 7/18/16-7/21/16, 9:00AM – 3:00 PM

Theatre & Kids Performing Arts Camp
For over 30 years, directors Will and Suzy Liegel have been offering year-round classes, touring children’s choirs, traveling children’s theatre and young performer’s shows in addition to its dynamic, professional and fun, carefully planned, creative camp for students with an interest in the performing arts and related fields. Camp features small age-divided classes for half- or full-day opportunities. The accent is on building self-confidence, taking “safe risks” and building teams all while polishing skills in the stage and screen arts.

Elementary Beginning Band (Grade 4)
Students who will be finishing 4th grade this year or are new to band and just started playing their instrument this year should enroll in this course. The fundamentals of ensemble playing will be taught. Individual techniques will be taught through an additional 30-minute group lesson per week.

Elementary Beginning String Ensemble (Grades 3-4)
Students presently in grades 3 and 4, or without previous string ensemble experience, but who have had school instrumental lessons, may enroll. The Beginning Ensemble will reinforce foundational skills and build ensemble technique. Sectionals will be scheduled Monday – Thursday.

Intermediate Band/Beginning Jazz Band (Grades 5-6)
This course is designed for students that will finish 5th or 6th grade this year and have played for at least two full years. Intermediate Jazz Band is also available for students who wish to meet for an additional hour each day. Jazz band instrumentation is limited to the following: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums, guitar, piano and bass. Individual techniques will be taught through an additional 30-minute group lesson per week.

Students presently in grades 5, 6 and 7 with ensemble experience may enroll. This class will give students continuing experience in ensemble work. The music will be selected to continue advancing techniques and further student progress.

Middle School Band/Jazz Band (Grades 7-9)
Students who finish grades 7- 9 this year and have 4+ years of instrumental experience should enroll in this course. Jazz Band is available to any student that plays saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum, guitar, piano and bass. Individual techniques will be taught through an additional 30-minute group lesson per week.

Suzuki Classes (Grades K-2)
Any K-2 student who has previously been enrolled in a Suzuki class may enroll. Small group classes will be assigned by the instructor according to the ability of the student. Suzuki classes will meet twice weekly and will be 30 minutes in duration. Each student will be contacted by NPSD staff prior to the start of camps with his or her lesson day/time.
