NPHS Boys Basketball Coach Ron Hassler Steps Down

Hassler, brother of former North Penn superintendent Robert Hassler, joined the team in 2008. The search is underway for a replacement.

North Penn High School (NPHS) boys varsity head basketball coach Ron Hassler stepped down from his position and broke the news Thursday night at the team’s annual awards program.

“Coach Hassler wanted his team to be the first to know, and he wanted to be the one to tell them,” said Donald Ryan, NPHS athletic director. “He is the only head coach these boys know, and they look up to him and admire the significant contribution he has made to NPHS basketball.”

Hassler said he wanted to retire to spend more time with his family. His three-year career with NPHS came after a 24-year coaching career in the Lehigh Valley, from which he retired in 2007.

He joined North Penn in 2008 and has led the team through three basketball seasons. He leaves the team, a conference co-champion, with a winning record. The team's overall record since then is 45-28, and the league overall record is 24-18.

NPHS will begin its search for a new head varsity basketball coach in the coming weeks, with hopes that one can be appointed in May.

“We wish Coach Hassler well, but know this, it is a loss to our program,” said Burt Hynes, NPHS principal. “He is leaving us in a good position, and our momentum and commitment to develop athletes who excel on the court and in the classroom will continue."
