Tex Mex Hosts 5K Race For Open Space

Nearly 1,800 people registered to run the three-mile course.

The streets of North Wales were packed on a humid Wednesday evening, as 1,742 registered runners, along with hundreds of spectators, came out for the Tex Mex 5K Race for Open Space.

The event started with a one-mile Fun Run, which was won by Berwyn resident Scott Posey, who attended the race with his wife, Joelle, and his two daughters, Tessa and Teegan.

"My family came out to run the 5K, so I figured I had to do something," said Posey, after finishing the race. "It's been a while since I've run a mile, but it's nice to get out here and sweat it out."

Over the following 15 minutes, streets lined with spectators cheered each runner until the last little guy crossed the finish line, which marked the start of the 5K.

Hatfield resident and Broad Street Rerun champion Bob Bacon was stretching with friends when he pointed to his friend, Brian Ulrich, of Duncannon, PA, and said, "That guy is going to win."

Sure enough, 16 minutes later, it was 23-year-old Ulrich who claimed victory on the three-mile course.

""It feels pretty good to win," said Ulrich. "This was a fun race with a lot of support on the course. I want to thank Scott Tantino from the North Wales Running Company because he has helped me out a lot."

Though there was no victory for Bacon, he was happy for his friend.

""I told you he was good!" said Bacon, who was struggling to catch his breath.

Asked about what he thoughts of his performance, Bacon stated that he may not be going far enough on his runs.

" I'm a little tired. Plus it was hot, really hot," said Bacon.

As the 5K wrapped up, hundreds of runners and spectators made the two-block journey over to Tex Mex Connection, where a large after-party was taking place. Those who ran in the race were given free food and drinks, so long as they still had their numbered bibs.
