EASTTOWN — When spectators came to the first Devon Horse Show back in the 19th century, many of them got there by horse and carriage. One hundred and sixteen shows later, carriage driving is still a big part of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. In fact, the event has added more opportunities for carriages both antique and modern.

The most elaborate display of antique carriages at Devon took place Sunday with the always-popular carriage pleasure driving competition, but that was just the beginning.

The most expensive and challenging to drive vehicles are the four-in-hand carriages, drawn by teams of four horses or ponies. In the Pleasure Drive, the winner of the four-in-hand class was the entry of John Frazier Hunt of Spring City.

“It’s a great honor to come to Devon. It’s one of the great shows in America,” Hunt said. “You want to make sure your horses are doing the best they can, you have wonderful guests and it’s a festive day. All the work seems to go into the background. It’s just so much fun.”
