Huntingdon Valley Fire Company Educates Lower Moreland Residents
To help celebrate Fire Prevention Week, the HV Fire Company held an Open House on Sat., Oct. 14, to help people learn about different safety methods.
The once again opened its home to area residents, mixing fun with the serious message of fire prevention.
The annual event, which took place last Saturday, marks Fire Prevention Week. Young visitors, some in "turnout gear," were treated to seats in the cab of fire engines and an opportunity to escape from a smoke condition simulated in a special “smoke house.” Firefighters also guided hands-on demonstrations on repelling using rescue rope, long with live high angle repelling demonstrations.
Visitors also had the opportunity to witness a close-up view of a firefighter's regular routine. Firefighters demonstrated how a victim is removed from a vehicle after an accident using the “Jaws of Life” and other tools. Philadelphia Area Search and Rescue also had search and rescue dogs on site and offered information on how they are used in various situations.
Using hay and target simulators, firefighters also guided demonstrations on how to put out fires. A hands-on demonstration using a 9-1-1 simulator also taught visitors how to escape a house fire.
The department distributed toys and fire prevention coloring books, balloons and other accessories. The Huntingdon Valley Fire Company 9/11 Memorial was also on display in honor of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001.
Of course, no visit to the firehouse would be complete without an appearance by Sparky the Fire Dog. The annual open house is also an opportunity for the public to see Huntingdon Valley’s state-of-the-art firefighting apparatus up close and meet the men and women who protect the community.
