Fire Ravages Jefferson Lane Home

A fire ripped through a home on Jefferson Lane in Lower Moreland Sunday afternoon.

Dozens of firefighters spent Sunday afternoon in the heavy rain fighting a dwelling fire on Jefferson Lane in the township.

A housekeeper and a dog were in the home at the time of blaze and managed to escape unhurt, according to Huntingdon Valley Fire Company Chaplain Paul Randolph. 

Fire crews were dispatched at 4:24 p.m. for a fire alarm at 2191 Jefferson Avenue - when the chief arrived he reported heavy smoke conditions coming from the roof. With in minutes large flames shot through the roof and more firefighters were called in from surrounding communities, Randolph said.

He added, the fire was put under control after more than an hour. By 6:30 p.m. firefighters were still extinguishing hot spots.

The homeowners were on their way home from vacation at the time of the fire, Randolph said.

Members of the homeowners family were brought to tears when they arrived at the scene of the burning home shortly after 5 p.m. 

The fire marshal's office is still investigating the blaze and is looking at a lightning strike as a possible cause, police and fire authorities said.

The family who lives at 2191 Jefferson Avenue is reported to be staying with family tonight.

Welsh Road was closed by fire police for hours due to the fire.

The was assisted by members of the Southampton Fire Co., Roslyn Fire Co., Abington Fire Co., Willow Grove Fire Co., Bryn Athyn Fire Co., Trevose Fire Co. and the Second Alarmers Rescue Squad.
