FREE CONCERT-The Sounds of Caribbean Music come to the Marple Library in Broomall on Wednesday July 12, 2017 at 7 pm!

Musicians Paul Downie and David Gettes will also explain the unique musical sounds and the social history of this very unique instrument!

The Friends of the Marple Public library in Broomall is pleased to announce a family focused FREE concert focused on the music of the Caribbean Islands featuring the steel pan drum as the principal instrument performing folk and popular music in the Caribbean traditions including classic and modern jazz, Broadway show tunes even music from the Beatles. This inviting rhythmic fun free concert for all ages is on Wednesday July, 12, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the library’s lower level community room.
The ever popular modern Steel Drum, or Steelpan is a chromatically pitched percussion instrument originally made from 55 gallon industrial drums that contained chemicals. Despite being a relatively a new member of the percussion family, the Steelpan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. Musicians Paul Downie, drums and David Gettes, Steel Drum, will not only share the lively energetic music from the islands but will also explain the origins, history and traditions of the steel drum and its unique musical sound.
