Legion of Honor Award Presented to Local Marine Chuck Krautheim by Earle Drake of the Gen. S.D Butler Detachment

Earle Drake, Chairman of the Chapel of Four Chaplains Committee of the Marine Corps League, Department of PA, presents the Award

On June 21 at the headquarters of Upper Darby Detachment 884, Marine Corps League, Earle Drake, a member of General Smedley D. Butler Detachment 741, Marine Corps League (MCL) of Newtown Square and Chairman of the Chapel of Four Chaplains Committee of the Department of PA, MCL, presented the Chapel’s “Legion of Honor Award” to Charles Krautheim, past Commandant of the Upper Darby Detachment, MCL, for his selfless service to the community. The Chapel of Four Chaplains has reviewed and approved Marine Krautheim’s receiving the Award.

Some examples of Chuck’s service to America and the community are: Chuck enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 and served in Vietnam where he came under enemy fire while serving as a radioman. Additionally, he and his wife Sandra own the Burhill Hardware store in Drexel Hill, PA. It has become a gathering place for anyone needing help. Often Chuck goes into the community to help those in need with money or any item they may require or provide transportation to the doctor or wherever they need to go. Everyone who comes into Chuck and Sandra’s store are made to feel welcome and at ease.

Chuck also is a member of the Marple/Newtown Combined Veterans Alliance and participates in graveside Honors Services. He collects clothing at his store to be distributed to the homeless. Marine Chuck Krautheim is very much a prime example of one deserving of the Legion of Honor Award.

The Chapel of the Four Chaplains is a national nonprofit organization, founded in 1947, which recognizes and encourages cooperation, brotherhood and selfless service. It memorializes the courageous act of four Army Chaplains who gave their lifejackets to others when the troop ship Dorchester was torpedoed on February 3, 1943, and honors the 672 men, including the Four Chaplains, who perished. The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation’s vision is to impart the principle of selfless service to humanity without regard to race, creed, ethnicity, or religious affiliation.
