Marines Make History Presentation to Young Students

Members of the Americanism Team of the Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League spoke on the Marine Corps' birthday.

Nov. 10 was the 239th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Members of the Americanism Team of the Gen. Smedley D. Butler Detachment of the Marine Corps League headquartered in Newtown Square, made a history presentation to students at St. Augustine of Hippo Episcopal Church’s all-girl after school program.

Marine Jim McGuigan, past Commandant of the Smedley D. Butler Detachment and current member of the Upper Darby Detachment, and Marines Paul Donohue and Earle Drake of the Butler Detachment gave an overview of the Armed Forces and a short history of the Flag. Marine McGuigan told of his WWII experiences and Marine Donohue described his experiences as a Marine Officer.

The St. Augustine after-school program provides snacks and homework help as well as a safe environment for the girls until their parents picks them up. The girls are students in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades at local Norristown schools. The photo is of Marine Jim McGuigan and four of the program’s participants.
