Newtown Square Library Welcomes Watercolor Professor and Artist, Wendy Scheirer!
June Watercolor Art Exhibit at Newtown Square Library - with Wendy Scheirer, Teacher at Wayne Art Center & Chester County Art Association

Newtown Square Public Library is honored to feature the
gorgeous watercolors of Wendy Scheirer, an exceptional artist and
faculty member who has taught everywhere from West Chester and
Immaculata Universities, to two popular local art institutions – The
Wayne Art Center, and The Chester County Art Association! Her
paintings have won multiple prizes at juried shows, and are in permanent
collections at the Hagley Museum and Kutztown University.
Wendy inherited quite a bit of her talent from her parents – her
father was a furniture manufacturer, and her mother was a potter - but
she honed her knowledge with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic
Design from Arcadia, and landed a great first job at American Greetings
Corporation.
“I thought the work was fascinating. I was one of twenty “Planning
Artists” who would develop concepts for greeting cards, and then send
them along to the two hundred or so “Finish Artists” who specialized in
certain areas – like botanicals or trains and cars. They would render
detailed versions of my initial artwork, and the final product could end
up on shelves in card shops and drugstores.”

After her daughter, Rebecca, was born, Wendy went free-lance, and
picked up a good amount of work with Norcross and AG. She decided to
specialize in watercolors because they seemed to be the safest medium to
use with a four-year-old in the house.
As her daughter grew, Wendy found more time to focus on her career,
and so she started taking classes again, and became certified to teach.
She teaches all levels of students, but related some tips for beginners
in watercolor:

The first class generally reviews the most important skill for
painters – and that is drawing. Being able to see where the air meets
the edge of an object is a vital building block for artists. I suggest
the classic book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty
Edwards, for all beginners. https://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Right-Side-Brain-Definitive/dp/1585429201
Then we move on to “laying a wash” (putting down colors) in one of three ways:
A flat wash (where all the color has the same value, or depth). A
graduated wash (where the colors have different values, or levels of
intensity) And a variegated wash (where different colors blend in a wet
and loose manner).
My classes are quite involved, and it’s wonderful to see students
learn so much in a short time. They go from “I’m painting a carrot” to
understanding the medium, and how to paint negative space, a design, an
element, or an impression.
Wendy is active in many organizations, and is a signature member of
the Philadelphia Water Color Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor
Society, and the Baltimore Watercolor Society. She has served on the
board of PWCS, and welcomes new students to her class “Watercolor –
Transparent and Opaque” which will be offered again this fall.
In the interim, the Friends of Newtown Square Public Library welcome
