A Jarring Experience

Cat with head stuck in mayo jar finds refuge at Tabby's Place

The hungry stray cat was only looking for a snack. He couldn’t have guessed that his love of mayonnaise would lead to a jarring experience.

Poking his head into a Hellman’s jar, the cat quickly found himself trapped. The small black-and-white stray was unable to extract himself, and he began to panic, flailing and lumbering about with the jar stuck on his head.

Compassionate neighbors spotted the cat. Unable to get near the frightened feline, they reached out for help via social media. Through a fortunate series of circumstances, the “jarred” stray came to Tabby’s Place: a Cat Sanctuary.

As a haven for cats from hopeless situations, Tabby’s Place was a perfect fit for the cat with ill-fitting headgear. Tabby’s Place staff rushed the little cat to the emergency vet, who sedated him and gently removed the jar.

Feeling freer – and perhaps miffed that all his suffering was for just a few licks of mayo – the young cat showed his spunky side. He was clearly a feral cat, who would be happiest in a safe outdoor home. Tabby’s Place named him Hellman’s, neutered and vaccinated him, ensured he was in good health, and inserted a microchip, so he would come back to the sanctuary in case of future misadventures. With a caring cadre of caregivers ready to feed and look out for him, Hellman’s settled into a barn home.

One thing is clear at Tabby’s Place: when you bring out the Hellman’s, you really do bring out the best. For one little tuxedo cat, the best is surely yet to come. With one jubilant sprint out of his carrier, he began his next eight lives.

Tabby’s Place can only help cats like Hellman’s because of generous supporters. The sanctuary receives over 95% of its income from individual donors. To nurture cats in need, visit https://www.tabbysplace.org/donate.html, or sponsor the TNR Fund, which exists to help stray cats like Hellman’s, at http://www.tabbysplace.org/SN_page.php?id=4.

Tabby’s Place: a Cat Sanctuary is a cage-free, no-kill sanctuary for cats rescued from hopeless situations, located at 1100 US Highway 202, Ringoes, NJ, 08551, and online at www.tabbysplace.org.
