New Hope Resident Falls Victim To Global Internet Scam

They received fraudulent messages from what they thought was their bank stating that their money was being used to purchase child porn.

NEW HOPE, PA — New Hope Borough Police have asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into a global internet scam that cost a borough resident a large amount of money.

The resident, police said, received a fraudulent message advising them that their Microsoft account had been hacked. They then received fraudulent messages from what they thought was their bank, stating that their money was being used to purchase child pornography.

Over several months, police said the scammers instructed the victim not to tell anyone or they could be charged with a crime. They subsequently convinced the victim to wire large transactions to Hong Kong.
