Overview of Active Listening-Lag Time and Congruent Communication
Active listening is responding to the messages (verbal and nonverbal) sent to you from another person. How to improve my Listening Skills!

Lag Time
- You can SPEAK at the rate of about 120 to 180 words per minute.
- You can LISTEN at the rate of 400 to 800 words per minute.
- The difference between those two speeds is call LAG TIME.
- Lag time can be used creatively or destructively.
- The purpose of the ESG Workshop, Monday, June 17th, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1680 Aqueton Road, New Hope PA 18938) is designed to retrain your lag time so you can be a more effective listener.
- Lag time means you have time left over in your head to think, while listening.
- Our culture does not teach us how to listen – it teaches how to talk.
Congruence in Communication
One-to-one communication involves: (Albert Mehrabian, Communication Without Words, Psychology Today, 1968)
- Words 7%
- Tone 38%
- Body Language 55%
Congruent communication occurs when words, tone and body language all give the same message.
