NEW HOPE, PA — The Phillips’ Mill stage comes alive this month with its annual Spring Musical Comedy Cabaret. This year, the Phillips’ Mill Players present “Games People Play,” May 13 to 16, with four evening performances beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Phillips’ Mill Community Association has produced drama events for 97 years. “Games People Play” is its 19th annual comedy cabaret, always a sellout event. This production
promises the same night of belly laughs, showstopping tunes, hilarious sketches, singing, dancing, and pure comedy mayhem, as usual. And every laugh helps support all drama
programs at the Mill, as well as the upkeep of the Mill itself.

The group’s 15 budding thespians will carry on in the true tradition of cabaret with this year’s theme of “Games People Play” presenting 12 different acts guaranteed to liven up the evening.

Like cabaret ancestors, the Players’ local talent comes from all walks of life — teachers, classically trained dancers, former corporate types, a rock band singer, TV commercial actors,
an ex-diplomat, and even someone who can play a Native American Flute!

What motivates them to the stage?

Fran Young is a long-time director who majored in theater at Northwestern University. After nearly 40 years as a high school teacher, she has brought her love of theater to Phillips’ Mill. For Young, “Cabaret is truly a gathering of community.”

Gery Juleff, born in Northern Ireland, is an ex-diplomat who once won the Eurovision Song contest in Uganda. (Juleff suggests it’s a long story!) After playing a washed-up actor, a nun, and a grandmother in drag in last year’s cabaret, Juleff freely admits he’s got the acting bug.

Fran Ferrone joined the Mill Players after 30+ years in the corporate world. Ferrone’s motivation goes straight to the heart, “just to see if I can still do it!”

When the cast gets fully immersed in the characters, the persona sometimes sticks for a while.

Tim Wade, a long-time drama member, tells how he and Leslie Crilley were Debbie and Bill in Rick Goodwin's "Socially Active." Long after the play was over, they continued to call each other by their character names occasionally leaving others wondering.
