Newtown Quaker Meeting Children to Feature the Christmas Story

The children of Newtown Quaker Meeting will present a special one hour Christmas program featuring the traditional Christmas Story on Sunday, December 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the historic Friends Meeting house at 219 Court Street. The public is invited to attend. www.newtownfriendsmeeting.org

For this special day of programs, the usual Quaker meeting for worship gathering in silent expectation will be held at 10:00 a.m. The service at 11 o’clock will be a “programmed service” featuring the children’s recitals, hymns, singing, and children performing on the violin, cello and piano with professional conductor and cellist, Debbie Watts, Director of Music at the Hun School in Princeton and a resident of Newtown and member of the Quaker Meeting.

Sarah Buxton of Newtown, Clerk of the Children’s Education Committee, said, “This year, we have many young members who have speaking parts for the very first time. Our children have been practicing lines and our young musicians have been practicing on their instruments. We look forward to celebrating the season with the entire community.”

Deborah Watts, Performing Arts Department Chair and Music Director at the Hun School of Princeton, will conduct “the children’s orchestra. Sarah Buxton said, “It is very exciting to have a skilled music professional like Debbie working with us and we look forward to this aspect of the pageant growing in the years ahead. It is inspiring to see our children celebrating through music as a community."

Following the children’s program, there will be finger food at noon in the Gathering Room of the Meetinghouse with its extensive collection of replicas of Edward Hicks’ paintings of the Peaceable Kingdom, Bucks County farmscapes and historic events. Edward Hicks, Quaker minister and artist, was a co-founder of Newtown Friends Meeting in 1815. The public is invited to attend all events. Child Care is provided.
