Wrightstown Man Sentenced In Death Of Grandmother

A Wrightstown man was sentenced Monday to serve 10 to 30 years in state prison for fatally attacking his grandmother last year. Jared Rose, 26, also seriously injured his father during the Jan. 29, 2015 attack.

According to the Bucks County District Attorney's office, Rose was trying to kill his father when he also attacked his 100-pound grandmother, with whom he was described as having an "unusually close and loving relationship."

Rose previously pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas to charges of attempted murder, involuntary manslaughter and disarming a law enforcement officer.

According to authorities, the altercation happened when Rose stabbed himself in the chest with a Swiss Army knife. That action prompted his father to call 911

"Rose grabbed the phone from his father, then began beating him. Rose’s grandmother, Lorraine Patterson, heard the violence, entered the office and was struck in the face when she tried to intervene," the District Attorney said in a statement.

Patterson was taken to St. Mary Medical Center, where she died 19 days later of pneumonia, a complication of the treatment of her injuries. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Rose then pursued his father outside the home and beat him with a golf club, then stabbed him with the shaft when the club broke, authorities said. "By the time Newtown Township Officer Daniel Clifton arrived, Rose, who had stripped down to his underwear, was pummeling his father, who lay in a fetal position in the snow," the District Attorney said.

Rose then turned on the officer, who then shot him twice with a taser. Rose then grabbed at Clifton’s gun but, luckily, the officer was able to pull away and force Rose to the ground, where he remained until additional officers arrived.
