While 39 is the highest number of deaths yet announced on a single day in the county, this rise should not be taken to mean anything, officials said. It takes time for numbers from the past several days to be tabulated, so each day's total typically reflect accumulated stats from multiple days.

In fact, 16 of those 39 deaths occurred in April.
