PHILADELPHIA, PA — It wasn't the end that anyone had envisioned back in late summer for this Philadelphia Eagles team, that was eliminated from the playoffs in a 17-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night.

Yet, nor could anyone have envisioned the journey this team had to undertake even just to get to this point.

Countless players, from stars to reliable regulars to important second-stringers, were lost to injuries this season. And the longer the season went on, the more players seemed to go down.

Carson Wentz went down with a head injury after a brutal hit from Seahawks star Jadeveon Clowney in the first quarter Sunday. Clowney appeared to hit Wentz as the quarterback was already going down, smacking his helmet into Wentz's. Wentz suffered a concussion and did not return to the game. The good news is that he made it through the 2019-20 season otherwise healthy, unlike his first few seasons in the NFL, and he should be good to go next year.

All-Pro Brandon Brooks was ruled out for the postseason after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the regular season finale against the New York Giants. He'll undergo surgery and will once again spend the offseason rehabbing a significant injury.

Miles Sanders battled back from a late season ankle injury to play in Sunday's game, leading the team's rushing attack with 69 yards on 14 carries. Sanders was reportedly on crutches after the game, but does not think he will need surgery.

Alshon Jeffery was lost for the season with a foot injury a month ago during the Monday Night Football game versus the Giants. He's expected to be healthy for next year, should he return to the Birds.

Defensive end Brandon Graham also left Sunday's game in the first half, shortly after Wentz, with a knee injury. He was able to return to the game, so it does not appear to have been too serious.

All-Pro defensive tackle Malik Jackson missed nearly the entire season after a Week 1 Lisfranc fracture in his foot. He told Eagles beat reporter Jimmy Kempski that he's optimistic he'll be ready to workout between April and June and will be ready for the 2020 season.

Star tight end Zach Ertz was questionable leading up to Sunday's game due to a back and kidney injury, but he did manage to play. In limited action he had two big receptions for 44 yards.

Along with Brandon Brooks, the Eagles offensive line was also without Lane Johnson Sunday. However, the team said that he would've been available for a hypothetical playoff game next week, had the Eagles defeated the Seahawks, so he should be ready to go for the 2020-21 season.

Speaking of the divisional round of the playoffs, more good news: wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who missed most of the year, was also plotting a return for a potential game next week.

Unheralded Boston Scott stepped in following the absence of Sanders, and it's a good thing. The rest of the Birds rushing depth was hurt, and much of it may not be back next year. Corey Clement (shoulder) will be a restricted free agent. Darren Sproles has announced his retirement. Jordan Howard, who also missed most of the second half of the season with a shoulder injury, will also be a free agent.

In summary: the Birds should have the bulk of their key personnel back for what they hope will be a deeper playoff run in 2020-21. But odds are, the supporting cast will look a bit different.
