Northampton Power Outages Caused By Downed Wires: PECO

NORTHAMPTON TWP, PA — A widespread power outage knocked out power for thousands in Newtown Township, Newtown Borough, and Northampton Township on Wednesday morning. All but 800 customers impacted by the outage have had their power restored as of 10 a.m., PECO confirmed.

The remaining outages are expected to be restored later this morning, PECO spokesperson Kristina Pappas said.

The outages, which cut off power for 2,600 people in Newtown Township and Borough, were caused by a downed wire, Pappas said. The outage also impacted 1,298 more in nearby Northampton Township.

The outage maps showed the impacted areas were in the around Swamp Road and the Newtown Bypass. Council Rock schools were not impacted by the outage, spokeswoman Susan O'Grady confirmed.

Jim Bampfield, the Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator in nearby Middletown Township, tweeted Wednesday morning that high tension lines were down in that municipality.

Pappas said PECO is aware of another outage in Middletown Township due to downed wires, but that does not appear to be related to the incident in Newtown. Both outages continued to be investigated by PECO crews, she said.
