Sophia Mattie, a fourth grader at Maureen M Welch Elementary, was honored by the Northampton Board of Supervisors as a Distinguished Citizen. Sophia received this honor for her fundraising activities for the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation. Sophia asked her birthday party guests to make donations to the CRBF instead of giving her gifts on her most recent (10th) birthday and she raised $410! Sophia has also gathered a large group of friends to make the popular Rainbow Loom bracelets to sell for the upcoming Bike the Basin event, the CRBF's largest fundraiser. The bracelets have raised over $500 so far! In addition to these activities, Sophia is also going to run in the upcoming 5K fundraising event for the CRBF, the Eye Run For Sight 5K, as the sighted guide of Mitchell Smedley, a blind 4th grader whose family is a Founder of the CRBF and Bike the Basin. She will also be selling her Bike the Basin bracelets there. Sophia is a wonderful role model of motivation and compassion!
